Your work & residence permit

One permit lets you live and work in Croatia — but only for the employer written on it.

Your single permit (dozvola za boravak i rad) is the document that makes your whole life in Croatia legal — your job, your health insurance, your bank account. Understanding exactly what it allows protects you from employers who lie about it to keep you afraid.

Key facts

In detail

What the permit actually allows

The permit lets you live in Croatia and work for the employer it names. You cannot legally work for a different company on the same permit unless that change is approved. New rules let you take limited extra work too — but only with another registered employer who meets all the conditions, never an undeclared cash job.

Renewing and changing employer

You renew the permit before it expires, usually together with your employer. From 2025–2026 the law became more flexible: after six months you can move to a new employer, and a short gap between jobs no longer means you instantly lose the right to stay.

  • Keep a photo of your permit and contract on your phone.
  • Start the renewal early — do not wait for the last week.
  • A new A1 Croatian language requirement applies to some renewals.

Warning signs

  • An employer says you "belong" to them and can never leave.
  • You are told you will be deported instantly if you complain.
  • Someone else keeps your permit and will not show it to you.
  • You are made to work for a different company than the one on your permit.

What you can do

  • Always keep your own photo of the permit and contract.
  • Check the employer name and the dates on it yourself.
  • For permit questions, contact HZZ or MUP directly.
  • If you are threatened, talk to the Ombudsman or a union first.
